The short answer: A Shopify store built on a Theme Store theme, with a small catalog and product content already written, usually takes weeks rather than months, because Shopify already runs the hosting, the checkout and the admin. A coded theme, a catalog that needs restructuring or cleanup, connections to other business systems, or a move from another platform can stretch the build into months. Which of those your store needs is the real answer, and it shows once the catalog and the must-have features are on the table.
Part of a Shopify build is finished before anyone designs a page. From the first login, Shopify supplies the hosting, the checkout, inventory tracking and the order emails. Nobody sets up a server or installs a shopping cart. That head start is why a Shopify timeline reads differently from a store assembled piece by piece; the platform-neutral answer to how long an ecommerce build takes covers the general case.
What Shopify does not hand you is your store. The hours go into the layers on top of the platform:
Add up the size of each layer and you have the timeline, which is why stores on one plan can land far apart on the calendar.
A Shopify store lands on the short end, weeks rather than months, when most of its layers stay small:
For the calendar, configuring a theme is the faster road. Whether a theme can carry your catalog is a separate call, weighed in should you hire a Shopify developer or use a theme.
A build drifts toward months when a layer grows large, and sooner when several do. On Shopify, these are the usual causes:
A store rarely carries all of these. The work is finding out early which ones yours does, because each one discovered midway moves the date.
A date worth planning around comes from the scope. Bring these to a free 30-minute consult with the owner:
From that list comes a timeline tied to the layers your store actually has. Cost follows the same scope: each Shopify build is scoped per store, quoted after the free consult, and the Shopify website cost answer lays out each line of the bill.
If your store already sells on Shopify and is being rebuilt rather than launched, the clock runs differently because the store stays open during the work. Shopify store redesign covers that path, and how long a website redesign takes covers redesign timing in general.

Usually, yes. A move carries work a new store never has: exporting products and customer records from the old platform, reshaping them to fit how Shopify organizes a catalog, and redirecting old product and page addresses so links and bookmarks still land. The old store keeps selling while the new one is built behind Shopify's password page, and anything that changes meanwhile gets a final pass before the domain moves.
Not all of it. Products, collections, customers and store settings live in the Shopify admin, not in the theme, so they carry over untouched. What stays behind is the theme work itself: section layouts, theme settings and any app blocks placed on its pages. Switching early costs little; switching after the design is approved repeats most of the design time.
