How long does a website redesign take?

The short answer: Most website redesigns for a local service business take about four to eight weeks from kickoff to launch. A small site with ready content can go live in two to three weeks, while a large site with a store or custom tools can run ten to twelve weeks or more. The biggest variable is usually not the code, it is how fast your content, photos, and feedback come back. Treat a redesign as a real project with dates, not something you squeeze in around everything else, and it moves on schedule.

What actually decides the timeline

Ask three shops how long a redesign takes and you will get three answers, because the honest one depends on your site, not on a standard clock. A handful of things move the number more than anything else.

Notice how many of those sit on your side of the table. The build itself is often the predictable part. The waiting is what varies, and most of the waiting is content and approvals.

Where the weeks actually go

It helps to see what fills a redesign timeline, because the calendar is not one long stretch of coding. A typical project moves through a few stages, and you can see how we run them on our how we build page.

Written out like that, it is easy to see why the same build can take four weeks for one owner and ten for another. The parts we control stay fairly steady. The review stage is where projects speed up or drag.

Realistic ranges, from small to large

Here are honest ranges for a local service business, measured from kickoff to launch, assuming your content is mostly in hand. These are build timelines, not marketing results, which run on a separate and slower clock.

To put the high end in perspective: a storefront we built for a Virginia retailer carries over 1,400 products with live Stripe checkout. A site like that is a different animal from a five-page refresh, and it is fair for the timeline to reflect the difference. Most owners asking this question sit in the middle, though: a real site, done properly, in about a month to two. If a shop quotes you a week for a full custom redesign, ask what they are leaving out.

When the honest answer gets longer

A few situations reliably add time, and it is better to plan for them than to be surprised by them.

That last point matters more than most people expect. A redesign done carelessly can drop rankings you spent years earning, usually because old URLs change and nothing redirects the old ones, so pages Google already trusted start returning errors. Done properly, your addresses are kept where possible and redirected where not, and search engines follow along. We will not promise how a redesign moves your rankings, because that depends on far more than a launch. We will promise not to throw away what you have already earned.

How to keep it on schedule

The fastest redesigns share a few habits, and almost none of them are technical.

On cost, a custom redesign generally runs $3,500 to $12,000 or more, one time, depending on size and features, and our work is month to month, with you owning the site, the content, and the accounts. If you want the reasoning behind those figures, our guides on what a website costs and how long a build takes go deeper. When you are ready, the simplest first step is a free homepage mockup, where you see your own redesign before you spend anything. We are Orlando based and have worked with local service businesses nationwide since 2008. Call or text (407) 694-2055 and we will give you a real timeline for your site instead of a guess.

Will a website redesign hurt my Google rankings?

It can if it is done carelessly, and it usually should not if it is done right. The common way redesigns lose rankings is that old page addresses change and nothing redirects the old ones, so pages Google already trusted start returning errors. A careful redesign keeps your URLs where it can and sets redirects where it cannot, so search engines follow the moves. We will not promise how your rankings move after launch, because that depends on far more than the build, but preserving what you already earned is a basic part of doing the job properly.

Can you redesign my site without taking it offline?

Yes. We build the new site on a separate staging address while your current site stays live and keeps working. You review it there, and we only switch the new site into place at launch, which keeps downtime to minutes rather than days. Your email and anything else tied to your domain keeps running through the change.

Do I have to rewrite all my content for a redesign?

Not always. If your current text is accurate and still sells the work you do, we can carry it over and clean it up. Thin, outdated, or missing content is often the real reason a site needs a redesign in the first place, so many projects do include new writing, but that is a choice you make, not a requirement. The more content you have ready before the build starts, the faster the whole thing goes.
