The top of this page covers what AI search optimization is and answers the questions people ask most. This is the longer version, for the owner who wants to see the actual work before paying for it. The picture to hold onto: someone opens ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini, or Perplexity and asks for a good plumber, an honest roofer, or the best shop in their town, and the tool hands back a short answer with a name or two. AI optimization, which most people now shorten to AIO, is the work of making your business one of the names these tools can find, understand, and repeat correctly.
This is newer than search engine optimization, and it is less predictable, and we will be straight about both facts. Below is how we do the work, what you get, where the honest limits sit, who should not pay for it yet, and how we check whether any of it is working. We are an Orlando shop that has worked with local service businesses across the country since 2008, and AIO is mostly an extension of that same work, clean content and clean data, not a separate magic trick.
For twenty years, search meant a list of blue links. You wanted to rank near the top, earn the click, and win the visit. AI answers work differently. The assistant reads across many sources at once, writes a short reply in its own words, and sometimes names a few businesses or links a couple of pages. Your customer may never scroll a list of results at all. They read an answer and act on it.
Not every AI result looks the same, either. Google's AI Overviews still show links under the written answer, so a click is still on the table. A pure chat reply in ChatGPT or Perplexity may give your customer everything they asked for without a single link, which means being named in the text itself is what counts. We plan for both, because your customers use both.
That shifts the goal. It is no longer only about ranking a single page. It is about being a business the model can find, describe accurately, and feel safe naming out loud. For that to happen, three things have to be true. The model has to know you exist. It has to have your facts right: your name, your service area, your hours, what you actually do. And it has to have a reason to bring you up when the question comes.
None of that is exotic. It is the same reputation and clarity that has always helped you in ordinary search, aimed now at a reader that happens to be a machine. The difference is that the machine is literal. It will not fill in the blanks in your favor. If your hours are listed three different ways across the web, it may repeat the wrong ones. If your website never plainly says what you do and where you do it, the model has less to work with, so it leans on whatever it can find, which might be a stale directory listing or a competitor's page that happens to mention your town.
Picture a homeowner three towns over asking an assistant who installs boat lifts near them. The model is not going to run a careful audit before it answers. It replies in a second or two from what it already has. If your site clearly states the service and the towns you cover, you have a real chance of being in that answer. If it does not, you are counting on the model to piece you together from scraps, and more often it will not bother. AIO is the practice of taking that guesswork away. We make the true facts about your business easy to find and hard to misread, and we hand the assistants clean, direct content they can quote without getting it wrong.
AIO sits on top of good SEO, not beside it. If your search foundation is weak, we usually start there, because the same crawlable, factual, well-organized content feeds ordinary search and AI answers at the same time. From that base, the specific AI work looks like this.
None of these steps are tricks, and not one of them tries to fool a model into saying something untrue. They make the truth about your business easier for a machine to find, read, and repeat. Because the assistants keep changing, this is not a set-it-and-forget-it project either. Facts drift, models update, and the cleanup is worth redoing on a schedule. That is the whole job.
If you are a small local business wondering which of these matters most, the honest ranking is this. Getting your facts consistent and your schema clean is cheap and high value, so it comes first. The llms.txt file is cheap insurance, so it goes in early too. The content work is the slow, compounding piece that pays off over months, so we keep at it rather than expecting it to land all at once. We tell you where your effort buys the most, not where it bills the most.
We do not sell AIO as a boxed product with a clever name and a tier chart. In practice it rides along with an SEO or content engagement, because the work overlaps almost completely. When it is part of your plan, here is what actually lands.
In practice the first month is mostly reading and fixing: we take that baseline, correct the facts that are wrong, add the structured data and the llms.txt file, and start closing the biggest content gaps. After that it settles into a slower rhythm of writing, checking, and adjusting as the tools change.
On cost, we keep it honest. Ongoing SEO and local SEO run $1,500 to $3,500 a month for most local service businesses, and $3,500 to $7,500 a month in competitive metros or for multi-location work, and AIO usually sits inside that rather than adding a separate bill. There is no AIO-only number to quote you, and we are not going to invent one. If you want the full picture of what this kind of work costs and why, our SEO cost guide walks through it. Everything is month to month, there is no long-term contract, and you own your site, your content, and your accounts, whether you stay with us or not.
Here is the part most agencies skip. No one controls what these models say, and that includes us. They are built and tuned by companies that do not publish how the answers get chosen, and the answers move. A reply you get from an assistant today can read differently next week after a quiet model update or a change in how it pulls from the web. A few things follow from that, and they are simply true.
We cannot promise that you will appear in ChatGPT, in Google's AI Overviews, or in any other assistant. We can make you far easier to find, describe, and cite, and we can clear away the things that keep you out of the answer. We cannot guarantee the result, because the result is not ours to hand out. Anyone who promises a guaranteed spot in an AI answer is either guessing or selling you something, and it is not something we will sell. We also have no special relationship with Google, with OpenAI, or with anyone else that would let us push you to the front.
The answers vary by person, too. Two people can ask the same thing in different words, from different cities, and get different names back. Models sometimes state a fact wrong even when your own information is spotless, which is called a hallucination, and while clean structured data lowers the odds, it does not drop them to zero.
This work is also harder to measure than ordinary SEO. There is no official rank tracker for AI Overviews the way there is for search results, and when an assistant sends a person to your website, your analytics often cannot label where they came from. We track what can be tracked, we tell you plainly what cannot, and we do not dress up a guess as data. If total certainty is what you need before you spend a dollar, AIO is not there yet, and you deserve to hear that from us before you start, not after.
None of this means the work is pointless. It means the honest version of the promise is narrower than the loud version you will hear elsewhere. We can make you the clearest, best-documented answer to the questions your customers actually ask, and we can keep you that way as the tools shift. What the models do with that is up to them, but you have stacked the odds in your favor instead of just hoping.
AIO is not the right first move for every business, and saying so upfront is cheaper for you than finding it out later.
If none of those describe you, and your website and local presence are already in decent shape, then AIO is a sensible next layer, and it is a reasonable time to add it while the field is still young and most of your competitors are still ignoring it.
You cannot manage what you will not look at, so we look, on a schedule, and we write down what we find.
We start with a baseline. We take the real questions your customers ask, both the ones with your name in them and the ones without, and we run them through the major assistants as they stand in 2026: ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, and any others worth checking for your field. We record the answers word for word, whether you were named, whether a competitor was named instead, and whether the facts came out right. That gives us a starting line instead of a hunch.
Then we re-run the same questions over time and compare. Did the assistant start naming you. Did it correct a fact it used to get wrong. Did it drop you after a model update. A single check tells you almost nothing here. A pattern over months tells you plenty, which is why we treat this as a slow read and not a one-time screenshot.
Accuracy gets its own attention, not just presence. A model that names you but sends people to the wrong service area, quotes hours you no longer keep, or credits you with work you do not do is a problem worth fixing even when you are technically in the answer. We flag those and chase down the source so the record gets corrected at the root, not just on your own site.
Where we can, we watch for AI tools sending real people to your site, while being honest that analytics often cannot label that traffic cleanly yet. And under all of it, we hold to the one measure that pays your bills: calls, texts, and filled-out forms. Turning up in an answer is nice. A booked job is the point, and we try hard not to confuse the two.
You do not have to wait on us to start looking, either. We have published more than 50 free tools at kellywm.com/tools with no email wall, including an AI visibility checker and an AIO readiness scanner you can run on your own site today, before you ever speak to us.
The short version: AIO is not a replacement for the work you already know. It is a payoff from doing that work well.
The things that make an assistant trust you and quote you are the same things that make Google rank you and make a human decide to call. Clear, honest content. Accurate facts in every place they appear. A real, well-kept Google Business Profile. Genuine depth on your website, and a steady stream of reviews from customers you actually served. Strong SEO and local SEO are not fighting AIO for your budget. They are the ground it stands on. Good content written for people is the same content a model reaches for.
So if you keep one idea from this page, keep this one: do the fundamentals well and you are already most of the way to being found by AI. We add the specific pieces on top, the schema, the llms.txt file, the fact cleanup, the question-and-answer pages, and we watch the results without flattering them.
