How UTM tracking works

A UTM link is just your normal page URL with extra parameters bolted on the end. The three core tags are utm_source (where the click comes from, like google or facebook), utm_medium (the channel type, like cpc or email), and utm_campaign (the specific promotion). Two optional tags, utm_term and utm_content, capture the paid keyword and which version of a link was clicked. When someone clicks, those values flow into your analytics so each visit is attributed to the exact campaign that sent it.

How to use this tool

Paste your destination page into Base URL, fill in source, medium, and campaign, and your tracking link builds live as you type. Hit Copy for the URL, download the QR code for print or signage, then save it with a label so you have a tidy library to reuse. What is a UTM link?
A UTM link is a normal URL with extra tracking parameters (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, and optionally utm_term and utm_content) added to the end. When someone clicks it, those tags flow into Google Analytics so you can see exactly which campaign, channel, and ad sent the visitor.
What are utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign?
utm_source is where the traffic comes from (google, facebook, newsletter). utm_medium is the channel type (cpc, email, social, qr). utm_campaign is the specific promotion (spring-sale, fall-roof-special). utm_term is the paid keyword and utm_content tells two versions of the same link apart (button-a vs button-b).
Why should UTM values be lowercase and hyphenated?
Analytics treats Email and email as two separate sources, and spaces get encoded as %20, which makes reports messy. Sticking to lowercase letters and hyphens keeps your data clean and groups correctly. The built-in linter flags spaces and uppercase and suggests a fixed value.
Does the QR code or saved library send my data anywhere?
Your saved links live only in your own browser via localStorage, so they stay on this device. The QR image is generated by a public QR service from the link text you build. Nothing is stored on our servers and there is no signup.
Is this UTM builder really free?
Yes, completely free with no account. Paid builders like UTM.io, Terminus, and LinkUTM charge a monthly fee for a saved library and QR codes, and Google's free builder has no save, library, or QR. This tool gives you all of that for free.
