Theme sections

In one sentence: A theme section is a modular block of content and layout, such as a banner, a product row, or a signup form, that a Shopify store owner can add, remove, reorder, and configure on a page without editing code.

How a page is assembled from sections

A Shopify theme built on the Online Store 2.0 architecture is not one fixed page design. It is a set of sections, each one handling a single job: a banner across the top, a row of featured products, a strip of customer reviews, a block of shipping details, a newsletter signup. Each section can carry its own settings for wording, images, colors, and spacing, so a store owner adjusts those settings directly instead of asking someone to change the underlying code.

Sections can also be turned on or off and dragged into a new order in the theme editor, and many sections split further into blocks, smaller pieces inside the section that can themselves be reordered independently. The same section can usually be added to more than one template, a homepage and a product page alike, with different settings on each, unless the theme limits where that section is allowed to appear.

Why section flexibility has a ceiling

For a store owner, sections are the difference between waiting on a developer for a small layout change and making that change directly. Swapping a banner image before a sale, adding a testimonial row, or moving the newsletter signup lower on the page are all section-level edits. That flexibility has a real limit: a section only offers the settings someone built into it. A layout idea that no available section supports, such as a custom comparison table, an image with clickable hotspots, or a non-standard product layout, is not a settings problem. It calls for a new section built for that exact job.

This is also where a store's chosen theme starts to matter as much as the platform itself. Stores running on the same platform can feel very different to manage day to day, depending on how many of their sections were built to be genuinely flexible and how many only expose a handful of fixed options.

Kelly Webmasters and Marketers designs and builds custom Shopify theme sections when a store's layout needs go past what a purchased or default theme offers. Custom Shopify theme development covers how that work is scoped.

Sections, the hero, and the rest of the theme

A hero section is one specific example, usually the first section on a page, but the wider term describes the whole building-block system a theme is made from. See hero section for that one page area, and Shopify theme for how a full set of sections and templates comes together into a storefront. Online Store 2.0 is the underlying architecture that made this kind of section flexible on every template, not only the homepage.

Related questions

Can a store owner add a brand new section without a developer?

Only if a section built for that purpose already exists in the theme or was added to it. The theme editor lets an owner configure and reorder existing sections freely, but building a new section from scratch, one with a layout or function the current theme does not offer, is usually development work, not a settings change.
