Shopify Payments

In one sentence: Shopify Payments is the payment provider built into Shopify, which lets a store accept card and digital wallet payments at checkout and receive payouts to its bank account without signing up with a separate payment company.

The step between a card and a bank deposit

When a shopper pays online, several things have to happen in a few seconds. The card details get collected securely, the card network and the shopper's bank approve or decline the charge, the money is held, and later it is deposited into the seller's bank account. That chain is payment processing, and somebody has to be paid to run it.

For years, selling online meant signing up with a processor as its own company, getting approved, and wiring its account into the store. Shopify Payments folds that job into the platform. A store turns it on from the admin, and the orders, refunds, payouts and card disputes all sit in the same place the products already live.

Picture a small shop that sells hand-poured candles. A shopper checks out with a saved wallet on a phone, the charge clears, the order appears in the admin, and the money arrives in the shop's bank account on the payout schedule. If the candle arrives cracked, the refund goes out from that same order screen.

Two limits come with it. Shopify offers it only in certain countries and regions, and only to businesses whose products fit its terms, so some stores cannot use it at all. And being built in does not make processing free: every card sale still carries a processing charge.

Why the choice shows up on every order

The processor a store picks is not a setting it thinks about once. It decides where the money lands and how quickly. It also decides whether Shopify adds a fee of its own. Shopify's pricing page, as of September 2026, lists that added fee for stores using an outside provider at Basic 2 percent, Grow 1 percent, Advanced 0.6 percent and Plus 0.2 percent, waived on Shopify Payments.

The choice also shapes the bookkeeping. With Shopify Payments, payouts, processing charges and refunds are reported inside the same admin as the orders that produced them, so closing out a month means reading one set of records. With an outside provider, that reporting lives in the provider's own dashboard, and lining it up against the store's orders becomes a recurring chore somebody has to own.

One habit is worth keeping on either path: the payment account belongs in the business's own name, not a builder's, because payout history and dispute records stay with whoever holds it. Whether an outside provider is still worth the added fee for a particular store is worked through in the answer to does Shopify charge transaction fees.

Vocabulary that sits beside it

Processing is one line in the running cost of any online store, whatever platform it is built on, and the ecommerce website cost answer puts it next to the rest of the bill. Shopify's plan prices, each dated, are collected in Shopify pricing explained. Checkout is also where shopping cart abandonment happens, which is why how the payment step feels to a shopper deserves as much attention as the fee behind it.

Related questions

Is Shopify Payments the same thing as Shop Pay?

No, though the names get mixed up constantly. Shopify Payments works on the store's side: it processes the charges, holds the money and pays it out to the business. Shop Pay works on the shopper's side: a saved checkout that remembers a shopper's details, so paying takes a few taps instead of a typed card number. The two are designed to work together.

Does moving a store to Shopify from another platform mean switching processors?

Not necessarily. A store that moves platforms can bring an outside provider along if it connects to Shopify, or it can take the move as the moment to turn on Shopify Payments. Either way, the payment setup is something to settle and prove out before launch day, not after the first real order.
