Websites for law firms, built for how people actually search

Most law firm websites are built once and never touched again: slow on a phone, generic across every practice area, and invisible to the AI tools more people now use to research a lawyer before they ever open Google. A site like that is easy to click away from, especially when someone is comparing two or three firms in the same few minutes. This page covers the custom-coded website work itself, what gets rebuilt, what a firm keeps control of, and what it costs.

Why most law firm websites don't hold up

A law firm site usually starts the same way: a designer builds a homepage, a handful of practice area pages, and an attorney bio or two, then everyone moves on. A few years later, the problems are easy to spot if you know where to look.

Some of this is a visibility problem more than a website problem. If the bigger gap is showing up in Google or the map pack at all, that's local SEO for law firms or SEO for law firms. This page is about the site itself: what's actually broken, and what a rebuild fixes.

What we actually do

We design and hand-code the site: no page builder, no recycled theme resold to every firm in the state. A law firm build typically includes:

This is custom web design, built the way we build every site: see how we build for the process, or law firm website design for a deeper look at what goes into a strong site. We also run first-party lead dashboards on more than 20 of the sites we manage, so a firm can see where its calls and form fills are actually coming from instead of guessing.

How this plays out for a law firm specifically

Someone searching for a lawyer is usually searching at a bad moment: after an accident, during a divorce, right after an arrest. They're often on a phone, comparing two or three firms in the same few minutes. A confusing practice area menu or a slow page loses that moment fast, and there often isn't a second chance at it.

None of this is legal advice, and we aren't a firm's ethics counsel. Final language and compliance sign-off is always the firm's call, or its bar counsel's, never ours. If ongoing visibility work makes sense alongside the site, we also run SEO for law firms and local SEO for law firms, separately, month to month.

What makes Kelly WM different

Most agencies selling law firm websites are reselling the same theme with a new logo dropped in. A few things are different about how we work:

That combination, a custom-built site, AI search work, free tools, and no contract, is built around one goal: easy to see what's being done, and just as easy to leave if it isn't working.

How the process works

Four steps, in order, starting well before any commitment is made.

What it costs

Custom website builds for law firms run $3,500 to $12,000+ one-time, depending on how many practice area pages, attorney bios, and intake features the build needs. A single-attorney site with three or four practice areas sits toward the lower end. A multi-attorney firm with a dozen practice areas and more custom intake logic sits higher, and things like a full attorney directory, a detailed intake questionnaire, or an integration with existing case-management software push a build further up that same range.

If a firm adds ongoing SEO or local SEO afterward, that typically runs $1,500 to $3,500 a month for most firms, and $3,500 to $7,500 a month in competitive metro markets or for firms marketing across multiple locations.

If the firm also runs Google Ads, that's quoted separately as a flat fee after a free consult, not built into a website price. Flat fee and percentage-of-spend are both common industry models; we just don't publish one number since ad spend varies too much firm to firm.

Everything is month to month. No long-term contract, and the firm owns the site, the content, and its accounts whether it stays one year or ten. For a broader breakdown, see how much a website costs, or run the what should you pay tool against the firm's own numbers.

Common questions

Do you only build websites, or do you handle SEO for law firms too?

Both, but they're separate services. A website build is a one-time project: the firm gets a finished, custom-coded site it owns outright. SEO and local SEO for law firms are ongoing, month-to-month work aimed at visibility in Google and AI search results. Plenty of firms start with just the website and add search work later, or never add it at all. Neither is bundled into the other by default.

How long does it take to build a law firm website?

Timelines depend on scope. A single-attorney site with a handful of practice area pages moves faster than a multi-attorney firm with a dozen practice areas and custom intake forms. Content, especially attorney bios and practice area copy, is usually the biggest factor, since we're writing real, specific content instead of dropping in placeholder text. We give a real timeline once we know the scope, not a generic estimate up front.

Can you make our firm show up in AI search tools like ChatGPT?

We can structure the site so tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews have a clear, accurate read on practice areas, attorney backgrounds, and location: schema markup, plainly written FAQ content, and pages that actually answer the questions people ask. We can't promise placement or citation in any specific AI tool, since none of them publish exactly how they choose sources, but every site is built to give the firm the best structural shot at it.

Do you handle bar advertising compliance for the website?

We build with common bar advertising norms in mind: space for a disclaimer where a firm's bar requires one, and no template default pushing toward case-result claims or client testimonials that could run afoul of a state's rules. We aren't attorneys and we don't provide compliance sign-off. Final wording and compliance review should always go through the firm or its bar counsel before anything goes live. Think of this as a structure that won't fight the firm's requirements, not a substitute for legal review.

What does a custom website cost for a law firm?

Custom website builds run $3,500 to $12,000 or more, one-time, depending on how many practice area pages, attorney bios, and intake features the firm needs. A single-attorney site with a few practice areas lands toward the low end. A multi-attorney firm with a dozen practice areas and custom intake logic lands higher. We quote a flat number once we understand the scope, and there's no subscription required just to have a website.

Do we own the website once it's built?

Yes. The firm owns the site, the code, the content, and any accounts tied to it: hosting, domain, analytics, whatever's part of the build. There's no long-term contract on the website itself, and no lock-in that requires paying us to keep the site live. If the firm ever wants to move the site elsewhere, it can.

Do you help law firms get more Google reviews?

We build the mechanics that make reviews easier to collect, a clear request process and a Google Business Profile that's fully set up and consistent with the website, through reputation management and Google Business Profile work. We don't write reviews, incentivize them, or promise a specific number of reviews or a rating: that's against Google's policies and isn't something an honest agency offers. What we build is the plumbing that makes it easy for a satisfied client to leave one.
