Google Ads for financial advisors, where the wrong click costs real money

Nobody searches for a financial advisor casually. Something happened: a rollover sitting in cash, a business sold, a parent's estate, and that urgency is why these clicks are priced the way they are, and why an account nobody watches spends a quarter's budget on job seekers and students. We build the campaigns around the households you actually want, and quote a flat monthly fee after a free consult.

Where advisory practices lose money on paid search

Paid search rewards precise words, and "financial advisor" is not one. The same two words get typed by a 55-year-old with a rollover sitting in cash, a college senior picking a major, and a person who meant to search for financial aid. All three clicks bill at the same rate, and in this category the rate is not small.

What we actually manage in the account

Running ads is a stack of small jobs, each of which quietly wastes money when nobody does it. These matter most for an advisory practice.

What we do not control: what competitors bid, what the auction charges on a given day, and whether the phone gets answered. The Google Ads hub covers the channel more broadly.

What one relationship is worth, and why the bid follows it

Two numbers decide most of what happens in an advisory ads account: what a new relationship pays in a year, and how many years it tends to last. Most advisors can produce both from memory. Very few have written them next to a cost per click.

The arithmetic cuts both ways. Because advisory fees recur, a click here can justify a price that would be reckless for one-time work, which is why the auction is priced the way it is: your competitors ran the same math. It also means a campaign mixing a high-value planning search with a cheap, high-volume one drifts toward the cheap one, and the calendar slowly fills with the least useful version of your practice.

Then there is the lag. Someone clicks in March, books an intro meeting in April, and funds in July. An account judged on this month's spend against this month's signed business will look broken every month of its life. So we track the steps in between, and hold the larger judgment until a window matching your real cycle has passed.

If the practice has a minimum, the ads should say so. Screening in the copy does turn people away, and it costs less than paying for the click and the intro meeting first. The same logic sets the stop rule: when a term's price passes what the work behind it can earn, drop the term instead of raising the budget. If that math does not work anywhere in your market, we would rather say so on the consult. The free what should you pay tool is a fair place to start.

Compliance, the calendar, and the phone

Ad copy and landing pages are advertising, so whoever reviews the practice's marketing will review these too. The account gets built with that step in mind rather than around it. We are not your compliance department and do not act as one.

What makes Kelly WM different

Plenty of agencies run an advisory practice's ads off a template: the campaign skeleton from their last dozen accounts, a shared keyword list, and a fee that is a percentage of whatever you spend. That scales well for the agency. It is also why so many owners have one bad story about trying Google Ads.

No ad budget buys everything. A growing share of searches now end in an AI generated answer, and being the source those answers cite is separate work, covered under AI search optimization. If organic is the bigger gap, see SEO for financial advisors. If it is the map pack, local SEO for financial advisors. If the site itself is the weak link, websites for financial advisors. All of it sits under the financial advisors overview, and financial advisor marketing is the longer read.

How this starts, and what it costs

Four steps, in this order, every time.

There is no published management fee here, and that is deliberate rather than coy. Two models are common in this industry. Some agencies take a percentage of your ad spend, which quietly pays them more every time they talk you into a bigger budget. Others charge a flat monthly fee regardless of budget size. We use the flat model and quote it after the free consult.

Your ad budget stays separate, goes straight to Google on your own card, and is never marked up. Everything is month-to-month. Ongoing organic work alongside the ads runs $1,500 to $3,500 a month for most practices, and $3,500 to $7,500 a month in competitive metros or for a multi-advisor, multi-location practice. A custom-coded site, if the site turns out to be the real problem, runs $3,500 to $12,000 or more, one time. How much SEO costs and how much a website costs break down those numbers.

Common questions

What do you charge to manage Google Ads for an advisory practice?

A flat monthly management fee, quoted after a free consult. There is no published number because the right fee depends on how many campaigns, service lines, and markets the account has to cover. We do not take a percentage of ad spend, so the fee does not climb every time your budget does. Everything is month-to-month, with no long-term contract.

How much do we need to spend on clicks?

It depends on your market and which searches you want to compete for, and prices vary widely between them. We will not quote a range from memory. On the consult we pull current numbers for your area and give you an honest floor: the point below which there is not enough traffic to manage an account sensibly. Your ad budget is separate from our fee and goes straight to Google.

Does compliance have to review the ads?

At most practices, yes, and we build around that rather than against it. Headlines and descriptions are marketing material, and so is the landing page they point to. We assemble an approved bank of copy up front so testing does not stall waiting on a review of one line. We are not a compliance department. Your compliance officer or outside counsel decides what runs.

How long before we can tell whether it is working?

Clicks and calls show up within days. Signed business does not, because your process takes as long as it takes: an intro meeting, a follow-up, paperwork, then funding. Judging one month of spend against one month of signed business will make a healthy account look broken. We watch the steps in between early, and hold the larger judgment until a window matching your real cycle has passed.

Can you promise a cost per new client, or growth in assets under management?

No. Google Ads is a live auction, and a click price can move the week a competitor changes their budget. Everything past the click is your process, your market, and the household's own decision, none of which an agency controls. We will give you honest ranges once the account has real data, manage toward them, and show you the actual numbers monthly rather than a tidied version of them.

Do we own the Google Ads account?

Yes. It is opened in the practice's name, or handed over to you if we build it. You own the account, the campaign history, the conversion data, and the landing pages, the same way you own your site and content in everything we do. If we stop working together, you keep all of it and can pass it to anyone else without asking us.
