Topical authority

In one sentence: Topical authority is the standing a website earns by covering one subject thoroughly and consistently, so search engines and AI assistants treat it as a dependable source on that subject instead of a site that mentioned it once.

Depth on one subject, not a score

Think about who you call when a neighbor asks about a crack in a foundation. Not the handyman who patched one. You call the person who talks about foundations all day, because they have seen your version of the problem forty times and can tell you which kind is boring and which kind is not.

Search works on the same instinct, mechanically. A site with one page about gutter guards is a site that has mentioned gutter guards. A site with a real page on the materials, one on what the install day involves, one on what goes wrong on a two story house, and one on what the price actually depends on, is a site about gutter guards.

None of this is a number. Third party tools sell authority scores, and those are the vendor's own estimates, not something a search engine hands out. Topical authority is a description of coverage, and the only place it exists is in what you have published.

Why a small local site can win this

National sites cover everything at a shallow depth. That is their business model and they are not going to change it. You cover one trade in one region, which means you can go further down than they ever will on the exact questions your customers ask, including the local ones nobody national can write: how the permit office in your county behaves, what the soil does to a slab here, which months book out before anyone calls.

That matters more now that AI answer tools sit between a customer and your website. Those systems have to lean on sources for a subject, and a site that covers the subject end to end is easier to lean on than a site with one thin page and a contact form. Building out that real body of pages, one question at a time, is what the ongoing work on local SEO is for.

There is a catch, and it is the whole catch. This only works if you actually know the answers. Coverage assembled from what other sites already say reads exactly like coverage assembled from what other sites already say, and it puts your name on somebody else's judgment. The pages that carry weight are the ones only you could have written: the objection you handle on every estimate, the failure you see every spring, the shortcut you tell people not to take.

Nobody buys this in a month

There is no launch day. You publish the page about the question that comes up on every estimate, then the next one, and after a year the site reads like it belongs to somebody who does this for a living, because it does.

Two neighboring ideas are worth knowing. E-E-A-T is Google's shorthand for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust, which is the credibility side of the same coin. Entity SEO is about an engine understanding that your business is a particular thing in a particular place, rather than a string of words. Coverage, credibility, and identity all pull in the same direction.

Coverage does not have to mean articles either. More than 50 free tools are published at kellywm.com/tools with no email wall, because a calculator can settle a question that a paragraph can only describe.

Related questions

Is topical authority the same thing as domain authority?

No. Domain authority is a score invented by SEO tool vendors to estimate how strong a site's links are. Topical authority is not a score at all. It is whether your site covers one subject well enough to be treated as a source on it.

Do I have to write about topics outside my trade to build it?

No, and it usually works against you. Authority is subject shaped, not volume shaped. Twenty pages about your trade say more about what you do than two hundred pages about everything, and the off topic pages give an engine a reason to be unsure what the site is for.
