AI citations

In one sentence: AI citations are the source links an AI answer credits for the information it used, shown as named sites, numbered footnotes, or a row of links beside the generated text.

The small print under a generated answer

Ask an assistant a question and you usually get more than the answer. Somewhere near it sits a strip of site names, a set of numbered markers, or a sources panel you can open. Those are the citations: the pages the system says it drew on.

They are not a ranking. An answer can cite a page sitting well down the ordinary search results, because the engine wanted one specific fact and that page had it stated cleanly. It can just as easily skip the page that ranks first, if that page buried the point three scrolls down.

They are not stable either. Ask the same question twice, or word it slightly differently, and the list of sources can change. Different assistants cite differently too: some name two or three sites, some footnote nearly every clause, some show nothing at all until you ask where the answer came from.

Getting named, and the trouble with proving it

Picture somebody asking an assistant who to call about a failing septic drain field near them. The answer names two or three companies and links the pages it leaned on. If one of those is yours, you have been handed to that person by the tool they trusted enough to ask in the first place.

Some of them click through. Plenty do not. They note the name, then call you, or search your business by name later that week, or text it to a spouse. That is real work heading your way that you will struggle to see in any report.

There is a distinction worth holding onto here between being cited and being recommended. A citation can be a footnote hung on a definition, which does very little for you. What you actually want is your business named as the answer to who should do this job, with the citation pointing at the page that backs it up. The first is a scrap of credit. The second is a referral.

Here is the honest limit. Some assistants pass along no referrer information at all, so a visit that began inside an AI answer can land in your analytics as direct traffic, indistinguishable from somebody typing your domain from memory. A clean zero on a referral line is not proof that nothing is happening. Often it is proof that nothing was measurable.

So the numbers worth watching are your own: calls, forms, texts, and what people say when you ask how they found you. We run first-party lead dashboards on more than 20 of the sites we manage for that reason. To find out whether the answers are naming you at all, our AI visibility checker is the place to start.

Grounding, hallucination, and why citations exist at all

Citations are the visible end of grounding, where a model is made to answer from documents it just retrieved rather than from memory. That is also the main defense against an AI hallucination, which is what you get when it answers from memory anyway and invents your hours, your service area, or a service you do not offer. Worth reading your own answers now and then for exactly that.

Related questions

Can I pay to be cited in an AI answer?

No. Google now sells ad placements in and around AI Overviews and AI Mode, and other engines are testing the same, so space near an AI answer can absolutely be bought. What no budget buys is a spot inside the organic answer itself. Which businesses get named there comes down to what the engine found and trusted, not to what anyone spent.

What if an answer cites something about my business that is wrong?

Fix the source rather than arguing with the answer. These systems lean on whatever they find repeated across text: your own site, your business listing, directory entries. Getting those to agree with each other about your services, hours, and coverage area gives the next answer better material to work from than a correction ever will.
