SERP (search engine results page)

In one sentence: A SERP is the page of results you get back after running a search, including the ads, the map results, any AI answer, the boxes of related questions and images, and the ordinary list of web links.

A stack of blocks, not a list of ten

The word is an old acronym for search engine results page. It survives because nobody has come up with a shorter name for the thing everybody stares at.

What it describes has changed a lot. A results page used to be ten links in a numbered column. Now it is a stack of blocks, and the blocks are filled by different systems that barely talk to each other:

Not every search gets every block, and the mix moves around by phrase and by device. That variability is the durable part. Assume the layout is different for each phrase you care about instead of picturing one standard page.

Why the layout beats the ranking

Ranking first in the web listings is a good thing that can still leave you well below the fold on a phone. Someone locked out of their car at nine at night may decide inside the map block and never scroll down to the links at all.

The blocks also have separate doors, and each door takes different work. The map block needs a claimed, complete, active business profile. The AI answer needs pages that are crawlable, clear, and worth quoting. The paid block needs budget. The web listings need the ordinary work of being the most useful page on the subject. Same screen, four different jobs, and no single rank number tells you how you are doing across them.

So watch something better than one number: which blocks your business shows up in for the phrases that bring paying work, and which of those blocks a customer would plausibly stop at. A first-place web listing under a full screen of other blocks is a different situation from a first-place listing on a plain page, even though a rank report scores the two of them the same.

Working out which blocks are winnable for your services in your towns, and which are not worth the money, is the first thing we look at in search engine optimization. We have been doing that for local service businesses nationwide, from Orlando, since 2008.

The page is not the same for everyone

A rank report gives one position for a phrase. The screen a real customer sees is a different thing. Results shift with where the searcher is standing and with what they are holding, and the phone is where the blocks stack up worst, so the page someone gets three towns over is not the page you get at your own desk. How far that person scrolls before your business name appears anywhere, in any block, is closer to your real position than the number in the report, and the gap between those two views is often the whole problem.

Two neighboring terms sit right next to this one. The local pack is the map block itself, the one that turns up on searches with a place behind them, and for most home services it is the block standing between a customer and the phone. Zero-click search is what happens when the blocks answer the question well enough that nobody visits a website at all. Both are really descriptions of what the modern results page has done to the old list of ten links.

Related questions

Does everyone see the same SERP for the same search?

No. Location, device, language, and what the engine already knows about the searcher all change the mix and the order. Two people in the same town can get different pages, which is why one screenshot proves very little on its own.

What is a SERP feature?

Any block on the page that is not a plain web listing: the map block, the related-questions box, the image row, the AI answer. They are called features because each one was added on top of the original list of links.
