In one sentence: A featured snippet is a short passage that a search engine copies out of one web page and prints above the ordinary results, with the site name and a link back to the page it came from.
A featured snippet is not something you submit. The engine picks a page that already ranks for the question, finds the part of it that answers, and prints that part at the top with a link underneath. Nobody at the company chose the paragraph.
It usually takes one of three shapes, and the shape follows the question. A how long question gets a sentence or two. A what is included question gets a short list. A what does each option cost question gets a small table.
Say a homeowner searches how long a roof inspection takes. The box shows two sentences from a roofing company's page, because that page happened to answer exactly that question, in plain words, near the top, on a site the engine already trusted for roofing. Three ordinary conditions, all of them met at once.
That is the whole mechanic, and it has held steady while the box around it has been redesigned over and over. Rank for the question, answer it completely in one place, keep the answer short enough to lift.
Not every search produces one. Questions get snippets. A search that is really a name, somebody typing a company or a product to reach its site, does not need an answer printed over the top of it, so no answer gets printed.
Your name sits above every ordinary result for that question, and the answer appears in your words rather than a competitor's. That is real, and it is why snippets are worth having.
It is also worth knowing the cost. Some people read the answer and stop there, so the slot can trade a click for a credit. On a question that was only ever a lookup, that is a fair trade. On a question that should have started a conversation, it stings. The honest read is that a snippet is worth having and not worth reorganizing a business around.
Snippets rotate, too. The passage moves to a competitor the month they publish a cleaner answer, which makes chasing individual snippets a poor use of a small budget. The better framing: a snippet is a byproduct. It lands on sites that answer questions clearly, and it keeps landing there.
The practical version for a local business is unglamorous. For every question your phone already hears, there should be a spot on your site where that question is asked in the customer's own words and answered in the first two sentences under it. That is ordinary SEO work, and that is where the depth on it lives. A clean, self-contained answer does not only earn the snippet slot. The same passage is what a written AI answer can quote, what a voice assistant can read out loud, and what a person skimming on a phone finds without scrolling. One piece of writing, several surfaces, no extra work.
That is the argument for writing the answer well once rather than tuning it for whichever surface is in the news. The surfaces change their manners often. What they ask of the page underneath has not changed much at all.
Which is why we do not treat snippet capture as a project of its own. Put the answer where the question belongs, keep it short enough to lift, and let the surfaces sort themselves out.
One caution about the writing itself. The passage that gets quoted is almost always the one written in the customer's vocabulary, not the trade vocabulary you use with your crew. Those are rarely the same words.
