PerplexityBot

In one sentence: PerplexityBot is the web crawler used by the Perplexity answer engine, which reads public pages so they can be indexed and then cited as sources alongside the written answers it gives people.

Why an answer engine needs a crawler of its own

Perplexity answers questions in writing and attaches the sources it used. That product decision creates a supply problem: it can only cite pages it has already read. PerplexityBot does the reading. It requests public pages, keeps what it finds in an index, and that index is where candidate sources come from when somebody asks something.

Like the other major crawlers, it announces a name and looks for instructions addressed to that name in robots.txt. A separate name handles fetches made in the moment because a user pointed at one specific page, which is why a site can be reachable in one situation and not the other.

The everyday version is a homeowner asking which companies in their area handle emergency storm work on trees. The answer arrives written out, sources listed beside it. Pages the crawler never saw are not in the running for that list, no matter how good they are.

Crawling also runs on its own schedule rather than yours. A page gets read, then read again some time later, and the gap in between is why an answer can quote hours or a service area you changed months ago. Nobody is being careless about it. The index holds what it last saw.

Being the source is worth more than the click

Two things are on the table when your page gets used as a source, and only one of them is traffic. The click matters. But the answer itself is a paraphrase of somebody's page, and if it is not yours it belongs to a national directory, a franchise site, or the competitor two towns over. Either way a stranger is reading a description of your trade written out of someone's words. You would rather they be yours.

What that takes is unglamorous. Facts stated plainly in text: the towns you serve, what you do, what you turn down, how you charge, when somebody answers the phone. Text a crawler can read, not claims baked into an image or assembled after the page loads. A page written like a brochure gives an answer engine nothing to quote, so it quotes whoever wrote plainly instead.

An answer engine is also not a directory listing, and the difference cuts both ways. A directory sells you a fixed slot. An answer engine gives you nothing fixed at all, because you get considered again from scratch every time somebody asks, on the strength of what your pages actually say about the thing they asked about. Worse if you were counting on the slot. Better if your pages answer the question.

Some of the same thinking sits behind a scripted chat concierge we built for a Marco Island boat tour company, answering guest questions across roughly 500 pages with owner approved answers only: the point is that the answer a stranger gets is the owner's answer. Terms that travel with this one

The category name is AI crawler. The habit of getting an answer without ever visiting a site is zero-click search. The sources listed beside the answer are AI citations, and the way a long page gets broken into quotable pieces is content chunking.

Related questions

If the answer is written out for them, why would anyone still call me?

Plenty of questions end at a phone number, an address, or a range of prices, and those readers act. The cited business is also the one the reader has now heard of, which counts for something on the visits that never happen.

Should I block it to protect my content?

That depends on what you sell. A publisher whose product is the writing has a real case for it. A local service business whose product is the work usually wants to be quoted and named.
