GA4

In one sentence: GA4 is the current version of Google Analytics, a free tool that records what people do on a website as a stream of individual events, such as page views, clicks, and form submissions, and reports where those visitors came from.

Events instead of visits and pageviews

Older analytics counted visits and pages, and everything else was bolted onto that frame. GA4 counts events. A page view is an event. A tap on your phone number is an event. A form submission is an event. Each one carries a few details with it, and the reports are built by grouping and filtering that stream.

That is why the screens feel unfamiliar to anyone who used the previous version. Some numbers you relied on are gone, some are renamed, and a few of them mean something different than they used to. Sessions still exist, but engagement is judged by whether a visit lasted, went to more than one page, or did something, rather than by the old bounce figure.

The trade is real and worth stating both ways. It is far more flexible, and it handles a call button as naturally as it handles a purchase. It is also less obvious out of the box, and an account nobody ever configured will report cheerfully for a year without once recording the thing you actually care about.

One practical consequence of the event model is that nothing gets measured unless somebody asked for it. Page views count themselves, because the base tag fires when the page loads. A phone tap, a click on a directions link, a submitted quote form: those are counted because a person set them up on purpose. The reports are only ever as good as that setup.

What a local business should get out of it

Two questions matter to most owners. Where did the people who contacted me come from, and which pages made them contact me. GA4 can answer both, but only once someone marks the contact actions as key events. Left alone it counts traffic. It has no idea that a tap on your phone number is worth more to you than a tap on your photo gallery.

The second thing to understand is the ceiling. Analytics measures the website, not the business. It cannot tell you which of those forms turned into a paid job, whether the caller was a customer or a supplier trying to sell you something, or what any of it was worth. That gap is exactly why first-party lead dashboards run on more than 20 of the sites we manage, sitting next to analytics rather than replacing it.

Numbers also arrive late and a little soft. Reports settle over a day or two, and very small slices can be withheld to protect the privacy of individual visitors, so a quiet week will never reconcile neatly against your own call log. Read the direction, not the third decimal.

Naming the events correctly, then getting a plain report out of them that an owner can read in two minutes, is the measurement half of analytics and conversion work.

Terms that come up right next to it

Tagged links feed the source reports, so utm parameters and GA4 are two halves of one question. Search Console covers the stretch before the click, the queries and impressions that analytics never sees, and the two rarely agree exactly because they are counting different moments. Engaged session is the GA4 idea that took over from the old bounce number, and conversion tracking is the broader habit of deciding in advance which actions count.

Related questions

Is GA4 free?

Yes, for the version essentially every local business uses. There is a paid enterprise tier built for very high volume and stricter service terms, and a normal service business website does not come near needing it.

How long does GA4 keep my data?

Detailed event data is held for a retention window you choose in the settings, and the shorter option is easy to leave in place without noticing. Summary reports reach back further. If you want year over year detail, set that window before you need it, because the choice does not apply backwards to data already discarded.
