Answer box

In one sentence: An answer box is any panel at the top of a search results page that hands the searcher a direct answer instead of a list of links, whether the engine calculates that answer from data it already holds or quotes it out of a website.

The result that answers instead of listing

For years a search result was a list of links, and the job was to be on the list. Now the top of the page often holds a box that just answers the question. Sometimes the engine already holds the fact, so it prints the hours, the address, the conversion, the score. Sometimes it quotes a sentence or two out of a web page and puts the source underneath.

Those two cases behave differently and it is worth keeping them apart. When the engine holds the fact itself, there may be nothing to click and no site getting credit. When it quotes a page, one business gets named above everything else on the results page. That quoted version is what most people mean when they say featured snippet.

The wrapper keeps changing names and shapes, and written AI answers now sit in the same space at the top. The mechanic underneath has been stable a long time: the fastest complete answer takes the slot, and the searcher reads it before deciding whether anybody deserves a click.

Which is why the useful question is not what the box is called this year. It is whether your page contains the sentence an engine would need in order to quote you.

When the box is about your business

For a local company an answer box cuts both ways. If it quotes your page, your name sits above the competition for that question, and the people who do click arrive already half answered. If it answers a question about your business from somewhere else, an old directory listing or a page you have never seen, that stranger's version is the one your customer gets.

So the durable move is not to chase the box. It is to be the clearest and most current source of your own facts: what you do, what you refuse to do, which towns you cover, how you charge, when somebody actually answers the phone. Engines quote the page that states it plainly, and vague pages get skipped in favor of ones that commit. It is dull work and it compounds, because the same plain sentences keep getting used long after you wrote them.

Owners ask whether the slot can simply be bought. Google sells ad placements in and around its AI answers, and other engines are testing the same, so the paid inventory at the top of the page keeps moving. The part that has not moved is this: no ad budget decides which businesses the organic answer itself names and recommends. That is settled by what you have published and how clearly you said it. The long version of how these surfaces choose their sources is in our plain-English guide to AI search.

Answer box, snippet, AI answer

Treat them as one family with different manners. The answer box is the slot. The featured snippet is the version quoted out of a page with a link back to it. An AI answer is a written summary pulled from several sources at once. All three reward the same thing: a page that answers the question in the first breath, in words a stranger can lift without editing them.

The same thinking works inside your own site. We built a scripted chat concierge for a Marco Island boat tour company, answering guest questions across roughly 500 pages with owner-approved answers only. That is the private version of the same idea: the question gets answered where it gets asked.

Related questions

Is an answer box the same thing as a featured snippet?

Not quite. A featured snippet is one kind of answer box, the kind lifted out of a web page and linked back to it. Other answer boxes are built from data the engine already holds, and those often carry no source link at all.

Does an answer box take traffic away from my site?

Sometimes, and it is worth being honest about that. If the question was a simple lookup, the person now has what they needed and will not click. The searches that turn into phone calls are usually the ones a two sentence box cannot finish.
