In one sentence: Answer engine optimization, often shortened to AEO, is the practice of preparing a website so that AI answers and search summaries can find it, read it correctly, and name the business when somebody asks a question in its line of work.
Ordinary search optimization aims at a results page: rank higher, get the click. Answer engine optimization aims one step earlier, at the software writing the answer before anybody reaches a list of links at all.
That software is not looking at your site the way a customer does. It reads text. Design that carries meaning to a person carries nothing to it.
Things it routinely cannot use:
None of that is exotic. It is the same content problem search has always had, held to a stricter standard, because there is no results page for a near miss to sit on.
It also does not mean writing hidden instructions aimed at a machine, or stacking a page with the exact phrase you hope somebody types. Answer engines are reading the text your customer reads. Anything written for the software alone is something a person then has to wade through, and it usually makes the page worse at the job you built it for.
You will also see this called AIO, AI search optimization, or generative engine optimization. Same work underneath. The labels are still settling.
Somebody asks an assistant who to call about a burst pipe in their town. The answer names two or three companies. There is no second page to click through to, and nobody scrolls a conversation hunting for the fourth option.
If your site never states plainly that you take emergency calls in that town, you are not on that short list, whatever you rank for on a normal search. That is most of the argument in one sentence.
The encouraging part is what this rewards. Ad space near an AI answer is for sale, and Google now sells it, but the organic answer is not: no ad budget decides which businesses it names and recommends. It rewards whoever bothered to write down what they do, where they do it, and what it costs, in text a stranger could follow without help. Dull work, and open to anyone willing to do it. Our guide to AI search optimization is the long version, and it sits alongside 361 in-depth guides in the learning library at kellywm.com/blog if you want to keep going.
One thing to be plain about: nobody controls this. The work makes your business easy to find, easy to read, and easy to trust. Whether a particular answer names you on a particular Tuesday is the platform's call, and that call changes. Anyone selling you certainty about it is selling you something.
Answer engine optimization is the practice. The surfaces it aims at have their own names: AI Overviews for the summary block on a search page, AI Mode for the conversational version of the same idea. The result you are working toward, your site being credited inside one of those answers, is an AI citation. And structured data is one tool of the trade, though not the main one.
Mostly overlap, with a different emphasis. Clear text, fast pages, accurate business details, and pages that answer real questions help you rank and help you get quoted, so nobody is running two separate programs. The difference is the target: SEO works to be chosen from a list, answer engine optimization works to be repeated inside an answer.
It helps, and it is not a substitute. Structured data confirms facts a machine already read in your text, which makes details like your hours or your service area easier to trust. It cannot assert something the page never says. If your page does not mention that you cover the next county over, no markup will make that true.
