Does AI search matter for tile contractors?

The short answer: Yes, and it lands earlier in a tile job than most contractors expect. Homeowners ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity about patterns, grout color, and what a shower or backsplash job involves, weeks before anyone types 'tile installer near me.' Getting named in those answers is not a separate channel with its own budget: it is mostly the same work that earns rankings, written so a machine can read it. The honest limit is that this is research-stage demand, growing but not yet filling your calendar, and hard to measure, because some AI assistants send visitors with no referrer.

How tile buyers use AI before anyone types 'tile installer near me'

Tile sells on looks, and looking is a long phase. Somebody who wants a new shower or a kitchen backsplash starts with pictures, then starts asking questions: herringbone or straight stack, what grout color hides dirt, whether the old subfloor can take porcelain. Those questions used to come back as ten links. Plenty of them now go into ChatGPT or land on an AI Overview and come back as a paragraph with a few sources under it.

Two things about that matter for a tile contractor.

None of this means the phone stops ringing from the map. It still does, and the local search work behind it is still the biggest lever most tile companies have. AI search is a second doorway into the same house, opening earlier in the project.

What an engine has to find before it will name a tile company

Ask one of these engines for a tile installer in a specific town and watch what comes back. It is not a ranking. It is a short list built from what the engine feels sure about, and four things decide whether you are on it.

Checking where you stand today has its own page: whether your business shows up in AI search. The free AI Visibility Checker runs those prompts for you, one of more than 50 free tools published at kellywm.com/tools, with no email wall.

Can a competitor buy their way into the tile answer?

Partly, and it is worth being exact about which part. Google now sells ad placements in and around AI Overviews and AI Mode, and other engines are testing the same. So yes: a tile company with a budget can show up next to the answer a homeowner is reading. Anyone still telling you AI results are an ad-free zone is out of date.

Here is the part that has not moved. No ad budget decides which businesses the organic answer itself names and recommends. That paragraph is built from what the engine has read and trusts. You cannot buy a sentence in it, and neither can the shop across town with the bigger ad budget. In a trade where the crews worth hiring are already booked out, that is a fair deal.

Paid search and the organic answer are two different fights. They behave differently, and that is the part worth planning around: ads stop the day you pause them, and the answer does not.

Start with the questions you already answer standing in someone's kitchen

The work that gets a tile company named is not exotic. It is writing down what you already say on estimates, publishing it where it can be read, and keeping your business details straight. Same content that ranks. Same profile that feeds the map. One job, two doorways.

A sane order for a tile contractor:

  1. Write out the ten questions you answer on every estimate: what happens to the old floor, how long the bathroom is unusable, why the tile you recommend costs more than the box store special. One page each, in your own words.
  2. State the trade and the territory plainly: services, project types, towns served.
  3. Clean up the profile and the listings so nothing contradicts anything.
  4. Then check what the engines say about you, and keep checking.

Whether it is worth paying for is its own decision, worked through on whether SEO is worth it for tile contractors, and what it costs per month has its own page. The AI side as a service is argued on the AI Search Optimization page, and what we build for this trade is on the tile page.

Related questions

Do AI answers actually name individual tile contractors, or just explain tile?

Both, depending on how the question is asked. Ask about grout color and you get an explainer. Ask who should tile a shower in a specific town and the engine leans toward businesses it can identify and verify, usually naming a few. The ones it names have clear, readable information about who they are and where they work, backed by listings that agree.

Our work is all photos. Does that hurt us in AI search?

Photos do not hurt, but on their own they do not help. The engines assembling these answers read text. Forty beautiful shower galleries with no captions, write-ups, or alt text are a blank wall. Put words beside the pictures: what the job was, what tile went in, what the tricky part was, what town it was in.

We tile for general contractors, not homeowners. Does AI search reach us at all?

Yes, in two ways. The homeowner on those jobs still looks you up before letting you into the house, and what they find is what an AI answer summarizes. And remodelers go looking for subs themselves, usually the week their regular crew is booked. Skilled tile setters are hard to find and general contractors know it, so being easy for an engine to describe is worth something on the trade side too.
