Does my business show up in AI search?

The short answer: The fastest way to know is to check for yourself, and it takes about ten minutes with no special account. Open ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini, then ask each one the questions your customers actually ask, like the best provider in your city or the nearest option open right now, and note whether your business gets named. There is no single dashboard for AI search the way Google Search Console tracks ordinary search, and the answer shifts from tool to tool, from one phrasing to the next, and over time. So you are not checking one ranking, you are checking a pattern across several tools and several questions.

How to check whether you show up

You do not need a tool or a login to get a first read: you can ask the AI assistants directly. Pick the questions a real customer would type, not the ones that flatter you. If you run a plumbing company, that means the best emergency plumber in your city, who fixes a burst pipe near me, and a plumber open on Sunday, each with your own town's name in it. Then run each question through the main tools, one at a time.

For each one, write down three things: whether you were named, which competitors were named instead, and which website or profile the tool cited. That last detail matters most. If the tool is quoting a directory or a review site rather than your own pages, that tells you where the gap is. If you would rather not run this by hand, our free AI visibility checker does a version of the same test and hands you the result.

What actually decides whether you get named

AI assistants do not keep a ranking table you can climb. They build each answer on the spot from the sources they trust most for that question, so whether you show up comes down to two things: can the models find clear, consistent information about you, and do other credible places on the web back it up. A handful of factors move the needle more than the rest.

Most of this is the same groundwork that earns ordinary search visibility, which is why AI optimization and SEO overlap so heavily. You are not building a second machine. You are making the one you already have legible to the tools.

Why the answer keeps changing

Here is the honest part: there is no stable yes or no. Ask the same question twice and you can get two different answers, because these tools generate their text fresh each time and weigh their sources a little differently on each run. The result also shifts with the searcher's location, their past activity, the exact wording of the question, and which model version happens to be live that week. A tool that names you today may leave you out next month, and the reverse happens too.

So treat a single check as a snapshot, not a verdict. What you are actually looking for is the pattern across several questions and several tools. Are you named often, never, or only for the easy questions where there is little competition? That pattern is stable enough to act on, even when any one answer is not. It also keeps you from overreacting to a single bad result, or getting comfortable after a single good one.

What to do if you are not showing up

First, do not panic over one bad result, and do not pay anyone who promises a fixed spot in AI answers. Nobody controls what these models say, the results take time, and they vary, so any guarantee of placement or a firm date is a red flag. What you can do is make yourself the obvious, well-documented answer to the questions you want to win. The practical order looks like this.

None of this is separate from ordinary search work, and the cost lives in the same place. For reference, ongoing SEO or Local SEO runs $1,500 to $3,500 a month for most businesses, and more in competitive metros or for multi-location work, always month to month with no long-term contract, and you own your site, content, and accounts. None of it buys a guaranteed line in an AI answer. It stacks the odds in your favor over time, which is the most any honest shop can promise.

Related questions

Can I pay to show up in AI search results?

Not the way you buy Google Ads. The organic answers that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews generate are not ad slots you can bid on, so there is no button that places you inside them. The answer is assembled from sources the model trusts, which you influence by improving your website, your Google Business Profile, and your mentions across the web. That is regular SEO and AI optimization work, not a media buy. Paid search ads sit in a separate box and do not move you into the AI answer itself.

Is showing up in AI search the same as ranking on Google?

They are related but not identical. AI answers often pull from pages that already rank well in ordinary search, so strong SEO usually helps your odds of being named. But the two do not always line up. You can sit on page one of Google and still be left out of an AI summary, or get named without holding the top organic spot. Treat AI visibility as its own thing to check, on top of your normal rankings, rather than assuming one guarantees the other.

Does my Google Business Profile affect whether I show up in AI answers?

For local questions, it often does. When someone asks an AI assistant for a service business in a specific city, the tool frequently leans on the same local data that powers Google Maps and the local pack, and that data is anchored by your Google Business Profile. A complete, accurate profile with a consistent name, address, and phone number gives the models clean information to repeat. It is not a guarantee, but a neglected or inconsistent profile makes it easier to be skipped.
