Does AI search matter for gyms?

The short answer: Yes, with a caveat worth saying out loud. People shopping for a gym now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews which studio near them runs 5am classes or offers a free trial week, and the answer comes back as a short list of names. That is still a smaller slice of your new members than plain local search and Google Maps, and it keeps growing. Almost everything that gets a gym named in those answers is the same work that wins the Map Pack, so treat it as a reason to take local search seriously, not a separate budget line.

The questions people ask an assistant before they book a tour

Gym shopping happens inside a tight radius. Almost nobody drives past three closer options to join yours, so the search is always some version of near me: near the house, near the office, near the school run. What changed is where it gets typed.

Nobody asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity the way they ask Google. They use full sentences with the conditions attached: which gyms nearby have childcare in the morning, is there a studio that coaches small groups for someone who has never touched a barbell, which place lets you try a class before signing anything. The assistant comes back with a few names and a sentence or two about each, and sometimes with nobody local at all.

Two things follow. The comparison now happens before the click, so by the time someone reaches your site they have a short list already, and you are either on it or you are the gym they never heard of. The ones who do arrive are warmer, and somebody who read a paragraph about how you coach before going looking for your trial page is easier to get in for a tour.

Then there is the calendar. The two weeks around New Year's bring out the most motivated and least loyal shoppers of your year, and they move fast. Whatever the engines say about your town's gyms in early January leans on pages they read months earlier. That is the annoying part, and the part that matters most.

Why an assistant names one studio in town and not the one next door

Nothing mystical is going on. The engines build an answer from pages they can read and local data they trust. Gym sites come up short in the same few places.

None of it is exotic. We publish more than 50 free tools at kellywm.com/tools with no email wall, including an AI visibility checker and an AIO readiness scanner, if you want to check your own site first.

What a January ad budget can and cannot buy

Owners ask this one immediately, so here is the straight version. Google now sells ad placements in and around AI Overviews and AI Mode, and other engines are testing the same thing. Anybody telling you AI answers are an ad free zone is describing last year.

What has stayed stable is narrower and more useful: no ad budget decides which businesses the organic answer itself names and recommends. You can buy a slot near the answer. You cannot buy your way into the sentence that says these three gyms in town are the ones worth calling.

That gap shows up hardest in the month it costs most. In January the paid inventory around your zip code gets expensive, because every gym within a few miles is bidding at once, and the recommendation itself was decided by work nobody bid on. Ads are still worth running, and we run them. We do not publish a management fee; agencies typically charge either a flat fee or a percentage of spend, and we quote flat after a free consult. Google Ads and the organic answer are two levers, and the expensive mistake is assuming the first moves the second.

Where a gym owner should actually start

In order, and none of it is dramatic.

  1. Find out what the assistants say about your gym today. That has its own answer here: does my business show up in AI search.
  2. Put the answers on the site as text: a real schedule page, a page explaining the trial and what happens on it, a page saying what membership includes and what it takes to leave. Your booking app is invisible to anyone who has not joined.
  3. Make the local facts identical everywhere: site, Google Business Profile, and every directory still carrying you.
  4. Run it as one program, not two. The AI answer and the map result feed on the same foundation, which is why AI Search Optimization sits alongside the rest of the work instead of replacing it. The gym version of that is on our gym page.

Money questions have their own pages: what monthly SEO runs for a gym, what a gym website build costs, and whether the math works at all.

One honest note on timing: this is slow work, so the fall is when to do it, not the second week of January when you need the tour calendar full. We keep our Google Business Profile updated. Isn't that enough for the AI answers?

It is the most useful single thing you can have, and not enough alone. A profile gives an engine your name, address, hours, photos, and reviews. It says nothing about whether you coach beginners, run a trial week, set a minimum age, or program strength instead of classes. Those answers live on pages you control.

Our members book everything in an app. Do we still need a schedule page on the website?

Yes, and it is one of the higher value pages a studio can publish. The app serves people who already joined. Someone asking an assistant whether anything runs before work has no login, and neither does a crawler. A readable page of class times, formats, and who each one suits gives both something to use.

If the AI answers the question, do we lose the visit?

Sometimes, and it deserves less worry than it gets. The win for a gym was never a page view. The next step after being named is a phone call, a map tap, or a trial booking, and those still come to you. Measurement is the awkward part: some assistants pass no referrer, so a visit that started in a chat lands in your analytics as direct.
