Sitemap generator & validator.

Validate your live sitemap (how many URLs, any parse errors) and catch a silent SEO killer most tools miss: sitemap URLs your own robots.txt is blocking. Or paste your pages and build a clean sitemap.xml in seconds.

Enter a domain (we will find /sitemap.xml for you) or paste the full sitemap URL. We count the URLs, catch parse errors, follow a sitemap index one level deep, and cross-check every URL against your robots.txt the way Googlebot reads it.

Fetching and parsing your sitemap…

Your sitemap and robots.txt should agree. Often they don't.

A sitemap tells search engines and AI crawlers which pages to index. The catch nobody talks about: if your robots.txt blocks a URL that your sitemap is asking Google to crawl, the two are fighting each other. Google obeys the block, the page goes nowhere, and you get vague coverage warnings with no obvious cause. This tool reads both files and shows you every conflict, plus a quick way to build a clean sitemap from scratch.

How the validator works

Enter a domain and we fetch /sitemap.xml (or use the exact sitemap URL you paste). We count the <loc> entries, follow a sitemap index one level deep into its child sitemaps, and flag parse problems. Then we fetch your robots.txt, parse it into proper user-agent groups with longest-match Allow override (the same way Google does), and check each sitemap URL. Any URL the rules disallow shows up in a clear, copyable list.

How the generator works

Switch to Generate, paste your page URLs or paths one per line, and the tool outputs a standards-compliant sitemap.xml with proper XML escaping and a lastmod date. Relative paths like /about are joined to a base domain you set. Copy it or download the file, drop it at the root of your site, reference it in robots.txt, and submit it in Search Console.

Free, in your browser, and it catches what the paid tools bundle away

Most teams pay for this. Screaming Frog gates serious crawls behind a desktop license, and BrightLocal folds sitemap checks into a subscription. Ours is free, needs no signup, and adds the robots.txt cross-check most of them bury or skip. We are honest about limits: very large sitemaps are sampled and a sitemap index is followed one level deep, so the URL count on huge sites is a sample, not an exhaustive crawl.

Pro tips

  • If a URL is in your sitemap but blocked by robots.txt, decide which one is right: either remove it from the sitemap or unblock it. Do not leave them in conflict.
  • Add a Sitemap: line to your robots.txt so crawlers find it even before you submit it.
  • Keep one sitemap under 50,000 URLs and 50 MB. Past that, split into multiple sitemaps tied together by a sitemap index file.
  • Do not list redirected, noindex, or 404 pages in your sitemap. Only include final, indexable URLs.
  • Resubmit (or just re-validate here) after a big content launch or a site migration.

Frequently asked questions

What is an XML sitemap?
An XML sitemap is a file (usually at /sitemap.xml) that lists the pages you want search engines to crawl and index. It does not boost rankings on its own, but it helps Google and AI crawlers discover every important page, which matters most for larger or newer sites.
Why does it matter if robots.txt blocks a sitemap URL?
It is a silent SEO killer. Your sitemap is telling Google please index this page while your robots.txt is telling Google do not crawl this page. Google honors the block, so the page is wasted and you get confusing coverage warnings in Search Console. Our tool cross-checks both files and flags every conflict.
How do I create a sitemap.xml?
Use the Generate mode: paste your list of page URLs or paths, one per line, and the tool builds a valid sitemap.xml you can copy or download. Upload it to the root of your site, then reference it in robots.txt with a Sitemap line and submit it in Google Search Console.
How many URLs can a sitemap have?
A single sitemap file can hold up to 50,000 URLs and must be under 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites split into multiple sitemaps tied together by a sitemap index file. Our validator follows a sitemap index one level deep and samples large sitemaps so it stays fast.
Is this sitemap tool really free?
Yes. There is no signup, no account, and no credit card. Tools like Screaming Frog and BrightLocal bundle sitemap checks into paid desktop apps and subscription tiers. This runs in your browser and adds a robots.txt cross-check most of them do not surface.
