Gutter calculator.

Estimate linear feet of gutter and how many downspouts you need from your roofline. Quick and simple.

Estimates for planning only. Always confirm measurements and order a little extra for waste and cuts.

How the gutter calculator works

This calculator estimates the linear feet of gutter, the number of downspouts, and the hangers you'll need from your roofline length, so you can plan a gutter project or check a bid.

The formula

Gutter length matches your roofline. Downspouts are spaced to handle the water volume:

Gutter = total roofline length
Downspouts = roofline ÷ spacing (about one every 30 to 40 ft)
Hangers = roofline ÷ 2 (one about every 2 ft)

Downspouts and sizing

A good rule of thumb is one downspout for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter, with at least one per gutter run. Long runs, steep or large roofs, and heavy-rain regions (like Florida) benefit from more downspouts and larger 6-inch K-style gutters instead of standard 5-inch. Proper spacing prevents overflow that damages fascia and foundations.

Pro tips

  • Add one downspout per gutter run minimum, even short runs need an outlet.
  • In heavy-rain areas, upgrade to 6-inch gutters and add downspouts.
  • Space hangers about every 2 feet (closer in snow country) so gutters don't sag.
  • Plan end caps in pairs and account for inside and outside corners (miters).

Frequently asked questions

How many downspouts do I need?
Plan one for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter, and at least one per run. Bigger roofs and heavy-rain climates need more to avoid overflow.
How far apart should gutter hangers be?
About every 24 inches for most climates, and closer (16 to 18 inches) where heavy snow or ice loads the gutters.
What size gutter do I need?
Five-inch K-style handles most homes. Step up to 6-inch for large or steep roofs and rainy regions, it moves noticeably more water.
How do I measure my roofline for gutters?
Add up the length of every roof edge that needs a gutter (usually the eaves). This tool turns that total into gutter, downspout, and hanger counts.
Is this an exact estimate?
It's a solid planning estimate. Corners, roof size, and rainfall affect the real layout, so a pro should confirm downspout placement.
