Drywall calculator.

Estimate drywall sheets, screws, joint compound, and tape from your total wall and ceiling area.

Estimates for planning only. Always confirm measurements and order a little extra for waste and cuts.

How the drywall calculator works

This calculator turns your total wall and ceiling area into the number of drywall sheets, plus the screws, joint compound, and tape to finish the job.

The formula

Sheet count is your area plus waste, divided by the coverage of your chosen sheet size:

Sheets = area × (1 + waste %) ÷ sheet coverage
A 4×8 sheet covers 32 sq ft; 4×12 covers 48 sq ft.

Plan about 36 screws per sheet, plus joint compound and tape for every seam.

Sheet size, screws, and mud

Bigger 4×12 sheets mean fewer seams to tape and a smoother finish, but they're heavy and awkward in tight spaces. Use 4×8 for small rooms and stairwells. Budget roughly one screw every 12 inches on edges and 16 inches in the field (about 36 per sheet), a tube or box of joint compound per ~100-150 sq ft, and joint tape for every seam plus inside corners.

Pro tips

  • Use 4x12 sheets on long walls to cut down on seams; 4x8 where access is tight.
  • Hang ceilings first, then walls, so wall sheets support the ceiling edges.
  • Buy 10-15% extra, cutouts for outlets, windows, and doors create waste.
  • Lightweight compound is easier to sand; setting-type sets faster for fewer coats.

Frequently asked questions

How many drywall sheets do I need?
Divide your total wall and ceiling area (plus 10-15% waste) by the sheet coverage, 32 sq ft for 4×8 or 48 sq ft for 4×12, then round up. This tool does it for you.
How many screws per drywall sheet?
About 36 screws per 4×8 sheet, roughly one every 12 inches on the edges and 16 inches in the field. Ceilings use a few more.
How much joint compound do I need?
Plan roughly one box or bucket per 100 to 150 square feet of drywall for taping and three finish coats. Texture adds more.
What size drywall should I use?
4×8 sheets are easiest to handle. 4×12 sheets reduce the number of seams on long walls and ceilings but are heavy and need two people.
Is this an exact materials list?
It's an accurate estimate for sheets, screws, compound, and tape. Corner bead, fasteners, and texture vary by job, so add those to your list.
